Thomas M. McCarty joined the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in May 2023, where he works in the Civil Division. There, he assists in advising all the civil clients for whom the county prosecuting attorney is the statutory legal advisor. These clients include all county elected officials, all the county boards and commissions, and the boards of trustees for the county’s sixteen townships. Thomas earned his Juris Doctorate in 1982 from the University of Akron School of Law. After graduating, he joined the Office of the Ohio Attorney General, first in Columbus, and later in the Cleveland Regional Office, where he was the first Assistant Attorney General from the Consumer Frauds and Crimes Section to join a regional office. In 1985, he returned to Akron in the private practice of law, concentrating on consumer, employment, workers compensation, and general civil law matters. From 1998 to 2009, he was a solo practitioner, concentrating on the same areas of the law, until he was elected Judge of the Akron Municipal Court. In 2012, he returned to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office in Cleveland, where he practiced in the Workers Compensation Section until retiring and joining the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
